During a send-off cocktail event on Friday honoring 18 retiring generals, Musa proposed that they be included in strategic roles, such as board appointments and other national initiatives. He stated, “Retirement should not be seen as a withdrawal from public life but as an opportunity to contribute to a greater cause in national development. I want to take this opportunity to inform you that we are collaborating with political leaders to ensure that the skills and capabilities developed by our armed forces do not go unused. For those transitioning into retirement, we are actively considering them for board roles and similar positions where they can continue to make a significant impact outside of active service.
“This initiative is still developing. We are counting on your expertise in national strategic planning, defense production, national
security, and other vital sectors, much like how veterans are actively involved in other countries.”
The event celebrated the achievements of 18 distinguished generals, including Maj. Gen. A. Mohamed, Maj. Gen. B.Y. Baffa, and Brig. Gens. D.O. Donibo, J.Y. Nimmyel, and K.F. Suleiman, among others. Musa encouraged them to remain prepared to serve whenever called upon, reaffirming the ongoing value of their skills.
Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, commended the retiring generals for their exemplary careers, marked by bravery and dedication. He acknowledged their contributions to international peacekeeping missions and their pivotal roles in addressing domestic security issues, such as combating violent extremism.
Oluyede remarked, “Their steadfast commitment to safeguarding our nation’s integrity, protecting its citizens, and upholding our core values has motivated many to pursue service in the military. Throughout their distinguished careers, they have served both the army and the country in various instructional, staff, command, and diplomatic roles. This courageous group has been instrumental in advancing Nigeria’s interests at home and abroad.
“From missions in Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Sudan to challenges in the Darfur region and the Bakassi Peninsula, as well as dealing with internal threats from violent extremist groups, their knowledge and experiences have played a crucial role in shaping the Nigerian Army and ensuring its readiness to carry out its objectives.”
Musa further noted that these re-engagement discussions align with global trends that leverage military veterans’ expertise for strategic national roles.
