Idris clarified that while the government values responsible media coverage for its role in enlightening and informing the public, spreading falsehoods and misinformation does not constitute genuine press freedom. He reiterated President Tinubu’s recognition of the media’s importance in promoting transparency and accountability through credible and timely reporting.
However, recent events appear to contradict the minister’s assertions, with the arrest and prolonged detention of journalist Segun Olatunji and Chika Victor Ibezim’s brother, raising concerns. Olatunji was reportedly held for 14 days over a publication deemed defamatory towards the Chief of Defence Intelligence, while Ibezim has been detained for over eight months due to allegations against his brother regarding the former Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola.
