Mourinho Targets Champions League As Top Priority At Real Madrid
Jose Mourinho has identified winning the UEFA Champions League as one of his major objectives after returning to Real Madrid for a second spell.
The Portuguese manager returned to the Santiago Bernabéu in June and is set to begin his latest European campaign when Real Madrid host Inter Milan on Tuesday.
According to Ireporter Online, Mourinho has dismissed the idea that his return to the Spanish giants is driven by a desire to settle old scores, insisting that his focus is on achieving major success with the club.
The 63-year-old previously managed Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, guiding the club to La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup.
However, Mourinho was unable to lead the Spanish giants to a Champions League final during his first spell, despite reaching the semi-finals in each of his three seasons in charge.
Speaking ahead of the clash with Inter Milan, Mourinho made it clear that European success remains a key part of his ambitions.
“I’m here also because I want to win the Champions League with Real Madrid. Of course I want,” he said.
Mourinho also reflected on the situation at Real Madrid when he first arrived at the club in 2010, noting that the team had struggled to advance deep into Europe’s premier club competition.
He pointed out that Real Madrid had not reached the Champions League quarter-finals for several years before his arrival and highlighted the club’s remarkable transformation in European football since then.
“Back in 2010, we weren’t even reaching the quarter-finals of the Champions League, and it had been ages since we’d played in a semi-final. Now we’ve won six Champions Leagues in a little over a decade,” Mourinho said.
The manager will now attempt to add another European title to Real Madrid’s decorated history as he begins his second chapter at the club.
