Dr. Temitope Ilori, the Director General of NACA, made this appeal in a statement issued on Sunday by the agency’s Head of Public Relations and Protocol, Toyin Aderibigbe.

Dr. Ilori acknowledged that while Christmas is a time for celebration, it also serves as an opportunity to make informed and responsible choices regarding one’s health.

“Knowing your status is a significant step towards safeguarding your health and the health of others,” she stated.

She encouraged everyone to utilize the free and confidential HIV testing services available nationwide, emphasizing that although HIV poses a considerable public health challenge, advancements in testing and treatment have transformed it into a manageable condition rather than a death sentence.

According to Dr. Ilori, early diagnosis is crucial for gaining access to life-saving medications, which contribute to longer and healthier lives.

“With the festive season bringing about more social interactions, it’s essential to remember the importance of safe practices. Use protection during sexual activities, and for those who choose abstinence, it remains the safest option,” she added.

The NACA Director General highlighted that ignorance is no longer an acceptable excuse, as there is now widespread access to HIV testing and educational resources, equipping individuals to make informed decisions.

She reaffirmed NACA’s commitment to reducing the spread of HIV and working towards an AIDS-free Nigeria.

“This festive season, give yourself the gift of health by visiting the nearest health facility or community testing center to learn your HIV status. Together, let’s strive for a healthier and happier Nigeria,” she urged.
