Nasarawa LG Elections Hit Roadblock: Postponed Indefinitely Amid Legal Challenge
In a significant turn of events, the eagerly anticipated local government election in Nasarawa State, initially slated for August 31, 2024, has been abruptly postponed indefinitely…..CONTINUE READING
This unexpected twist comes in the wake of a legal challenge to the election process, casting a shadow of uncertainty over the scheduled democratic exercise.
The Nasarawa State Independent Electoral Commission (NASIEC) chairman, Barrister Ayuba Usman Wandai, officially confirmed the postponement in a statement issued on Monday. During a crucial meeting with members of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Lafia, Wandai disclosed that the legal challenge emanated from a court summons filed by Paul A. John and 12 others.
The lawsuit targets specific sections of the Nasarawa State Local Government Election Law 2018 and the Local Government Council’s Elections Guidelines 2024.
NASIEC, having received the court summons from the Federal High Court in Lafia, chose to exercise caution by studying the legal implications thoroughly. The commission, upon careful consideration, decided to indefinitely halt all activities related to the local government elections scheduled for August 31, 2024.
Expressing the commission’s commitment to resolving the legal hurdle promptly, Wandai stated, “Pursuant to the above, the Commission has decided to postpone indefinitely all scheduled activities leading to the conduct of the 31st August 2024 Local Government Councils Elections.”
As NASIEC instructs its legal team to seek an expedited hearing on the matter, the fate of the local government elections remains uncertain, leaving both politicians and residents in Nasarawa in suspense
