National Security Threat? IGP Asks Senate To Probe Missing Rifles Behind Closed Doors

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has urged the Senate to conduct a closed-door investigation into the alleged disappearance of 3,907 assault rifles, citing security concerns.

In a letter to the Senate, Egbetokun dismissed the 2019 Audit Report by the Auditor-General for the Federation, which claimed thousands of rifles were missing or unaccounted for in police armories as of January 2020, calling the report inaccurate.…….READ MORE 

The letter, read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio after the passage of the 2025 budget, came 48 hours after an intense investigative hearing, where top police officials, including the IGP, struggled to clarify the findings in the audit report.

Egbetokun emphasized that sensitive security matters should be discussed privately to prevent misinformation, safeguard national security, and allow for more thorough fact-finding. He also requested additional time for internal investigations into the missing firearms.

Meanwhile, police spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi assured the public that efforts were ongoing to recover the missing weapons, with many already accounted for in police armories.
