Navy Strikes At Smuggling Ring, Seizes Petrol And Beer In Akwa Ibom

while transferring the suspects. The arrest took place in the coastal waters of Ibaka, located within Mbo Local Government Area.

Among those arrested were three individuals suspected of oil theft, who were found with 2,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, and 1,000 cartons of beer intended for export to Cameroon. These items, along with other valuable goods worth millions of naira, were handed over to representatives from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) in Akwa Ibom.

The arrests occurred during a routine night patrol along the Mbo River at around 7 pm on Wednesday. A wooden boat, carrying the goods, was intercepted and searched. The PMS was discovered hidden beneath cartons of beer, intended for smuggling into Cameroon.

Captain Aneke warned individuals or groups involved in smuggling and other criminal activities in Nigerian waters to cease immediately or face legal consequences. He emphasized the Navy’s commitment to addressing maritime crimes in the region, stating that such activities would be tracked through advanced surveillance and intelligence gathering.

Assistant Superintendent of the NSCDC, Willie Sunday, confirmed that the case would undergo further investigation to determine the suspects’ culpability and ensure their prosecution.
