NDDC Managing Director Calls For Increased Boat-Services Linking Niger-Delta States (Details)
Samuel Ogboku, the Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), has urged additional investors to support commercial boat services in connecting riverine communities across the Niger Delta region.
Speaking at an event in Calabar over the weekend, Ogboku emphasized the significance of boat services in linking various riverine areas, especially considering the region’s predominantly riverine states.
He highlighted the benefits of commercial boat services, citing their potential to alleviate the challenges associated with road transportation, such as lengthy travel times and safety concerns. Ogboku stressed the importance of such interventions in addressing prevalent issues like poverty, inadequate infrastructure, and unemployment in the region.
Ogboku expressed the NDDC’s commitment to collaborating with the company operating the boat services to expand the initiative across all Niger Delta states, aiming to enhance connectivity and spur economic development.
Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, representing the Southern Senatorial District of Cross River State, echoed the sentiment, underscoring the historical and cost-effective nature of water transportation. He emphasized the transformative impact of boat services on local economies in the Niger Delta region, drawing parallels to historical conquests facilitated by mastery of water routes.
