In a statement released on Saturday, Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson for Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening its long-standing ties with Lebanon.

“The Federal Republic of Nigeria congratulates Joseph Aoun on his election as President of the Republic of Lebanon. We eagerly anticipate building upon our strong and historic relationship for the mutual benefit of our citizens,” the statement read.

A President with a Mission
Joseph Aoun, previously the head of the Lebanese army, has pledged to lead his nation through recovery and stability following a period of political deadlock and conflict. His election was bolstered by the support of key political factions and international allies, including the US, France, and Saudi Arabia.

Aoun’s first major challenge will be overseeing the implementation of a ceasefire agreement with Israel. The agreement includes the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon and the disarmament of Hezbollah by January 26.

In his inaugural speech, President Aoun vowed to restore the Lebanese state’s control over weapons, referencing Hezbollah’s military influence. He also committed to rebuilding areas devastated by the conflict with Israel, a task projected to cost $8.5 billion, according to the World Bank.

With a firm mandate and international backing, Joseph Aoun’s presidency marks a new chapter for Lebanon, and Nigeria is poised to support its progress.
