The Managing Director and CEO of TCN, Suleiman Abdulaziz, represented by Olugbenga Ajiboye, Executive Director of the Transmission Service Provider, disclosed this at the Power Sector Working Group meeting in Abuja on Wednesday.

He revealed that 128 towers had been destroyed by vandals or bandits between January and November 2024. “We’ve spent about ₦8.8 billion to restore the towers to full functionality,” Abdulaziz stated, expressing frustration over weak prosecution practices that allow vandals to escape accountability.

Abdulaziz noted challenges such as security threats during restoration efforts and limited working hours imposed by military escorts in affected areas. He emphasized that such hurdles severely hinder the power sector’s ability to deliver electricity efficiently.

Meanwhile, Power Minister Adebayo Adelabu, represented by Chief Technical Adviser Adedayo Olowoniyi, announced Nigeria’s participation in “Mission 300,” a collaborative project with the World Bank and African Development Bank aimed at providing electricity to 50 million Nigerians by 2030.

This initiative will be formalized in January 2025, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu set to sign the Compact agreement in Tanzania.
