In a statement, Nwabufo highlighted the significance of the refinery’s restart, noting that it had been dormant for many years due to neglect by previous administrations. He explained that the Buhari administration initiated the refinery’s rehabilitation in March 2021, leading to its successful restoration.

“The Port Harcourt Refinery, originally built in 1965 with a capacity of 60,000 barrels per day, has now received a new lease on life. After years of inactivity, it is now operational, marking a historic moment in Nigeria’s oil industry,” Nwabufo said.

He emphasized that this move is part of the broader efforts by President Tinubu to stimulate local refining and reduce the nation’s reliance on costly petrol subsidies. Nwabufo also addressed claims regarding the refinery’s operations, dismissing reports that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) was blending resins with naphtha to sell as fuel, calling them unfounded.

Despite concerns about the refinery’s long-term sustainability, Nwabufo reassured Nigerians that the Tinubu administration is committed to ensuring the refinery’s continued success. He described the launch of the revamped plant as a step forward in securing Nigeria’s economic future and improving the livelihoods of its citizens.

“While there will always be concerns regarding any major national project, the administration is determined to address these issues and ensure the refinery’s success for the benefit of all Nigerians,” he added.
