Nigerian Governor Drops ‘His Excellency’ Title, Adopts New One

Umar Bago

Governor Mohammed Umar Bago of Niger State has expressed his preference not to be addressed as ‘Excellency,’ ‘Honourable,’ or ‘Mr Governor’ but rather as the “Farmer Governor.”

He made this announcement during the presentation of the 2024 budget to the State House of Assembly, emphasizing that the new title reflects the government’s commitment to prioritizing agriculture.

He said: “I want to inform the people of Niger state that from today, my nomenclature has changed and I wish to be addressed as Farmer Governor Bago from henceforth.”

During the budget presentation, the governor, clad in a t-shirt and trousers, clarified that he did not impose a ban on civil servants wearing agbada, as reported by some media organizations. He clarified that his emphasis was on ensuring that civil servants in ministries requiring physical activity, such as works and agriculture, dress in attire conducive to effective functioning.

Furthermore, the governor transformed the state’s Trade Fair Complex into a multipurpose facility for sports and recreation, renaming it the Bola Tinubu Square (BTS).
