The case was brought forward by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to the State Intelligence Bureau (SIB), leading to Comrade Tarbutu’s arraignment before Magistrate II Damaturu on Wednesday.
According to Barrister Mohammad Mohammad Ngumurumi, the Secretary of the NBA in Yobe State, the North East Development Commission (NEDC) provided palliatives consisting of rice, sugar, spaghetti, textiles, and blankets to be shared among select unions, including the NLC. However, Tarbutu allegedly failed to distribute the items as instructed.
Ngumurumi stated, “He was urged to share them among the members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), and Nigerian Bar Association (NBA). He didn’t share these items with NUJ and NBA.”
Tarbutu pleaded not guilty during the arraignment, but the magistrate, His Worship Hasiya Abubakar, ordered his remand in prison until April 18, 2024, for the principal hearing.
The development underscores the importance of accountability and transparency in the distribution of relief materials, especially during times of crisis.
