CBN Raises Interest Rate to 24.75% The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has increased the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR), the benchmark interest rate, from 22.75 percent to 24.75 percent.
CBN Governor, Olayemi Cardoso, announced this decision during the 294th meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) press briefing held in Abuja on Tuesday.
MPR serves as the base interest rate in an economy, influencing other interest rates within the economy.
Cardoso mentioned that the adjustment aims to address the country’s escalating inflation rate, which reached 31.70 percent in February.
The MPC opted to raise the interest rate by 200 basis points in efforts to combat rising inflation.
He stated: “The committee’s decision includes raising the MPR by 400bps to 24.75 from 22.75 percent, adjusting the asymmetric corridor to +100bps/-300 basic points, and retaining the Cash Reserve Ratio of Deposit Money Banks at 45 percent while increasing the CRR of Merchant banks from 10 percent to 14 percent.”
