The 2026 Ballon d’Or race has become increasingly competitive following the conclusion of the UEFA Super Cup, with several top players strengthening their claims for the prestigious individual honour.

According to Ireporter Online, Paris Saint-Germain’s 2-1 victory over Aston Villa in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday, August 12, has further reshaped the contest, particularly for players who played key roles in the French club’s successful campaign.

PSG took the lead through Khvicha Kvaratskhelia before Brian Madjo restored parity for Aston Villa shortly before the interval. Désiré Doué later scored the decisive goal in the second half to hand PSG another major European trophy.

Although performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup are expected to play a significant role in determining the final Ballon d’Or voting, the latest European success has added further weight to the campaigns of several contenders.

Harry Kane currently occupies the top spot among the leading candidates. The England and Bayern Munich striker enjoyed an exceptional season, scoring 73 goals and helping the German giants win a domestic double while reaching the Champions League semi-finals. His remarkable scoring record has made him one of the strongest favourites for the award.

Reigning Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé remains a major contender after another outstanding season with France and PSG. The forward reportedly scored six goals at the 2026 World Cup, including a hat-trick against Norway, while contributing significantly to PSG’s domestic and European success. The club’s UEFA Super Cup triumph has further enhanced his credentials.

Barcelona and Spain youngster Lamine Yamal is also firmly in the race. The teenager helped Barcelona claim LaLiga and the Supercopa de España, while his performances contributed to Spain’s World Cup success. However, his individual impact during the tournament was considered less significant than that of some of his major rivals.

Manchester City midfielder Rodri has also strengthened his case following a remarkable World Cup campaign with Spain. The former Ballon d’Or winner reportedly featured in all eight of Spain’s matches and collected the World Cup Golden Ball. He also helped Manchester City win the Carabao Cup and FA Cup, although the club missed out on the Premier League and Champions League titles.

Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé completes the current top five. The France international reportedly scored 10 goals and registered four assists at the World Cup as his country finished fourth.

Mbappé has also enjoyed a historic individual year, becoming the first player to win the Golden Boot awards in LaLiga, the Champions League and the World Cup within the same calendar year.

With the final voting still to come, the Ballon d’Or race remains open, with Kane, Dembélé, Yamal, Rodri and Mbappé among the leading names competing for the prestigious award.
