Kebbi 2027: Governor Idris Drops Deputy, Names New Running Mate

Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, has replaced his deputy, Umar Abubakar Tafida Arugungu, as his running mate for the 2027 governorship election, with the All Progressives Congress (APC) announcing Ibrahim Muhammad Augie as his new running mate.

According to Ireporter Online, the development was disclosed by the APC National Organising Secretary, Alhaji Suleiman Muhammad Argungu, during a stakeholders’ visit by members of the Argungu Emirate to the governor at the Presidential Lodge in Birnin Kebbi.

Suleiman explained that the decision to replace the incumbent deputy governor was based on professional legal advice regarding Arugungu’s eligibility to continue as the governor’s running mate in the 2027 election.

He stressed that the decision was reached with the knowledge and consent of the outgoing deputy governor, dismissing speculation that the development was the result of a disagreement between Governor Idris and his deputy.

The APC official urged party leaders, members and supporters across the state to accept the decision and remain united ahead of the 2027 general election.

Governor Idris also dismissed reports of a rift between him and Arugungu, assuring party supporters that the change was not motivated by any personal disagreement.

The governor expressed confidence in his new running mate and called on APC members to remain focused on the development of Kebbi State and the party’s prospects in the 2027 election.

Ibrahim Muhammad Augie, who has now been selected as the governor’s running mate, previously served as Commissioner for Finance in Kebbi State under former Governor Atiku Bagudu. He is from Augie Local Government Area of the state.

The latest development marks a significant political adjustment within the Kebbi APC as Governor Idris prepares for the 2027 governorship contest.
