The vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has explained that his decision to work with former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi was driven by national interest rather than personal ambition.

According to Ireporter Online, Kwankwaso said he does not consider the presidency an obligation, stressing that political office should primarily be viewed as an opportunity to serve the people.

The former Kano State governor made the remarks while featuring in the News Agency of Nigeria Personality Interview Series in Abuja.

Kwankwaso said his willingness to accept the vice-presidential position represented a step forward, adding that leadership positions are ultimately subject to divine will.

He explained that his experience during the 2023 general election also gave him a better understanding of Obi and convinced him that both politicians could work together for the benefit of the country.

Kwankwaso noted that he initially had limited knowledge of Obi during their earlier attempt to collaborate politically in 2023. However, he said subsequent interactions and developments over the years allowed him to better understand Obi’s personality and political outlook.

According to him, consultations with members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, supporters of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and the Obidient Movement also influenced the decision to form the political alliance.

He said the groups believed that a balanced presidential ticket involving representatives from the North and South could attract broader national support.

Kwankwaso further cited Nigeria’s security challenges, declining agricultural productivity and deteriorating infrastructure as some of the issues that motivated him to support the political arrangement.

He maintained that the country needs a political leadership focused on addressing its pressing challenges and creating meaningful democratic change, rather than one driven solely by individual ambitions.
