Coventry City have completed the signing of Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi from Nottingham Forest for a reported fee of £9 million as the club prepares for its first Premier League campaign in 25 years.

According to Ireporter Online, the 29-year-old forward has joined Frank Lampard’s side ahead of their opening league fixture against defending champions Arsenal, providing Coventry with another attacking option for their return to England’s top flight.

Awoniyi leaves Nottingham Forest after four seasons at the City Ground. He joined the club from Union Berlin in 2022 for £17.2 million, becoming Forest’s record signing at the time, and went on to score 23 goals in 103 appearances.

The Nigerian striker was given an emotional farewell by Forest ahead of the club’s 2-0 pre-season victory over Brest on Sunday. His teammates and members of the coaching staff formed a guard of honour before the second half, allowing Awoniyi to say goodbye to the supporters.

Forest manager Oliver Glasner praised the forward’s character, professionalism and commitment during his time at the club.

Glasner described Awoniyi as one of the most pleasant personalities he had encountered and said his willingness to give his best for the team made him deserving of the special farewell.

Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis also paid tribute to the Nigerian striker, saying Awoniyi would always have a special place in the club’s history and had provided supporters with memorable moments.

Awoniyi’s final season at Forest was difficult, with limited playing opportunities after Chris Wood and Igor Jesus moved ahead of him in the pecking order. He made 17 appearances across all competitions, starting three matches and scoring four goals.

His time at Forest was also disrupted by a serious injury suffered in May 2025 when he ruptured his intestine after colliding with a goalpost during a match against Leicester City. The injury required intensive medical treatment, including doctors placing him in an induced coma.

At Coventry, Awoniyi will reunite with fellow Nigerian and Super Eagles teammate Frank Onyeka as the club strengthens its squad ahead of its Premier League return.

Coventry have also brought in Gus Hamer, Carl Rushworth, Loum Tchaouna, Aurele Amenda and Caleb Yirenkyi during the summer transfer window as Lampard continues to build a squad capable of competing in the top flight.
