Addressing concerns during a courtesy visit to The Nation headquarters in Lagos, Ajaero emphasized that governors could afford the proposed minimum wage if they prioritize appropriately. He highlighted that the proposal was crafted in response to the economic challenges facing the nation.

Ajaero clarified that the ₦615,000 figure was calculated based on considerations of essential needs such as food, healthcare, education, and other utilities. He stressed that the removal of the fuel subsidy exacerbated the economic situation, prompting the need for a higher minimum wage.

“We looked at food, medicals, education, and other utilities. We didn’t make provision for communication, offering, and the likes. Those are some of the things we took into cognizance before we arrived at ₦615,000,” Ajaero explained.

He further elaborated on the impact of the subsidy removal, stating, “Probably, if the subsidy was not removed, we would have suggested ₦80,000.” Despite misconceptions surrounding the proposed wage, Ajaero affirmed that the intention was to improve the standard of living for workers and their families.
