NLC Vows to Keep Fighting Despite Abduction and Assault on President Joe Ajaero
Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has reaffirmed its commitment to holding the government accountable, despite facing intimidation and violence. Benson Upah, the NLC Spokesperson, revealed in a recent interview that the NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, was abducted and beaten in November last year. Despite this harrowing experience, Upah emphasized that such tactics will not deter the NLC from speaking out.
Upah clarified that the NLC’s criticisms are not driven by personal grievances but by a collective responsibility to protect the integrity and sovereignty of Nigeria. He dismissed allegations that the NLC is involved in any conspiracy, treasonable felony, or terrorism financing, stating that their actions are motivated by a deep passion for the country’s welfare.
In his interview with Arise TV, Upah stated, “There is nothing personal in this. If the government acts in the interest of the people, we will commend it. But if it does something harmful to our collective well-being, we will continue to criticize it. Not even the arrest of Joe Ajaero will stop us. Last year in November, they abducted Ajaero and beat him up, but that didn’t stop us from talking.”
He further added, “The government has accused us of conspiracy, treasonable felony, and terrorism financing. I want to state with every sense of responsibility and honor that we have nothing to do with those offenses. For many, securing Nigeria is about salaries, wages, allowances, or budgets. But for us at NLC and the Labour Movement as a whole, it is about passion. Our driving motive has always been the integrity and the sovereignty of this country.”
The NLC’s unwavering stance highlights its determination to fight for the rights and welfare of Nigerians, even in the face of threats and violence. Their message is clear: no amount of intimidation will silence their voice in the struggle for a better Nigeria.
