NLC Spokesman Benson Upah Warns: ‘Political Power Is Fleeting—Those Pushing Police Into This Don’t Own Nigeria
Benson Upah, the outspoken spokesman for the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has issued a stern warning to the police and those in positions of power, cautioning them to consider the long-term consequences of their actions. In a candid interview on Arise TV, Upah emphasized that Nigeria does not belong to any individual or organization, and that political influence is transient.
Upah reminded the nation that the pictures of past heads of state, displayed in official buildings, serve as a powerful reminder that no one remains in power forever. He urged those currently wielding power to reflect on their experiences and exercise restraint, drawing lessons from history.
“Political power is impermanent,” Upah stated, urging those in charge to have perspective when making decisions that affect the nation and its citizens. His comments came in response to the recent request by the police for an interview with Joe Ajaero, a key figure in the NLC.
Upah’s words were a clear warning: “The only people we are advising are the police and those who collude with them. Those in favor of bringing the police into this situation are not citizens of this country; at most, they are powerful bystanders. The portraits of people who were in office before them can be seen if they turn around. That should serve as a compass for them; eventually, it will all work out.”
This statement serves as a timely reminder to those in power that their actions will have lasting impacts on the nation, and that political authority is not a permanent possession. As Upah wisely pointed out, the lessons of history should guide their decisions, ensuring they act in the best interests of Nigeria and its people.
