French football legend Zinedine Zidane has strongly backed Lionel Messi in the long-running debate over the greatest footballer of all time, arguing that anyone who continues to question the Argentine’s status does not fully understand the game.

According to Ireporter Online, Zidane also tipped the Inter Miami forward to win the 2026 Ballon d’Or, saying he would vote for Messi “100 times” if given the opportunity.

The former Real Madrid manager praised Messi’s ability to remain among the world’s elite players at the age of 39, describing his continued performances at the highest level as remarkable.

“I think people really don’t understand how incredible it is to still be among the best players in the world at 39 years old,” Zidane said.

Messi was named among the 30 nominees for the 2026 Ballon d’Or after the official shortlist was announced on Tuesday.

The Argentine remains the most decorated player in the history of the prestigious individual award, having won it eight times. His most recent triumph came in 2023, following his influential role in Argentina’s World Cup-winning campaign in Qatar.

Zidane believes Messi’s longevity and ability to continue performing at the highest level make him a strong candidate for another Ballon d’Or.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if Messi won the award,” he said, while questioning whether any of the other nominees had done more than the Argentine to merit the honour.

Messi recently announced his retirement from international football, marking another significant moment in the final stage of his decorated career.

Zidane was even more emphatic when discussing the GOAT debate, dismissing continued arguments against Messi’s claim to the title.

“If anyone still has doubts about the GOAT debate, honestly, that person does not belong in football society,” Zidane said.
