NNPC Foundation Performs 1,000 Free Eye Surgeries In Bayelsa

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Foundation has successfully carried out 1,000 free cataract surgeries in Bayelsa State, as part of its ongoing nationwide eye health initiative. Arukwe noted that the implications of vision loss go beyond health, impacting productivity, independence, and quality of life—thus making it both a medical and socioeconomic concern.

Speaking at the flag-off of the South-South free cataract screening and surgery program at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa, she encouraged beneficiaries to make full use of the opportunity to restore their sight. She was represented at the event by the Foundation’s Manager of Health Services, Mr. Jude Ayalogu.

She explained that the free screenings and surgeries, which commenced on April 1, 2025, are part of a broader campaign by the Foundation to combat preventable blindness across all six geopolitical zones in Nigeria.

“In many rural and underserved communities, access to quality eye care is limited, resulting in preventable blindness for individuals who cannot afford or access the necessary treatment,” she said. “At NNPC Foundation, we view eyesight not just as a sense, but as a vital component of human dignity and opportunity. This belief underpins our outreach.”

The Foundation’s goal is to restore sight to 6,000 Nigerians—1,000 in each geopolitical zone—through free cataract screenings, surgeries, and public awareness on eye health. Arukwe reaffirmed the Foundation’s commitment to advancing equitable, affordable, and sustainable healthcare across the nation.

Bayelsa State First Lady, Mrs. Gloria Diri, who officially launched the program, lauded the NNPC Foundation for its dedication to improving healthcare services. She described cataract as a major public health issue in Nigeria and urged residents of Bayelsa to take advantage of the initiative and help spread the word to surrounding communities.

The Medical Director of FMC Yenagoa, Dr. James Omietimi, also expressed gratitude to the Foundation, noting that the intervention is a significant step toward restoring vision and hope for many in the region.
