Drama In Edo Assembly: Sacked PDP Leaders Reemerge As Minority Heads In Stunning Twist
In a dramatic twist within the Edo State House of Assembly, lawmakers Charity Airobarueghian and Yekini Idaiye have been reappointed as Minority Leader and Minority Whip, respectively—just a day after they were removed as Majority Leader and Chief Whip………READ MORE
Both lawmakers, who represent the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), were relieved of their previous leadership roles on Monday, April 7, during a sudden reshuffle that also saw Natasha Osawaru Irobosa ousted from her position as Deputy Majority Leader.
Despite the shake-up, Airobarueghian (Ovia North-East I), Idaiye (Akoko-Edo I), and Irobosa (Egor) remain PDP members.
Their positions were filled by lawmakers from the All Progressives Congress (APC): Ibhamawu Jonathan Aigbokhan (Esan West) as Majority Leader, Addeh Emakhu Isibor (Esan North-East I) as Deputy Leader, and Lecky Hussein Mustapha (Etsako West I) as Chief Whip. The appointments were made during an emergency plenary session.
On Tuesday, Speaker Blessing Agbebaku confirmed the reappointment of Airobarueghian and Idaiye into their new minority leadership roles. This followed a letter from the PDP’s Edo State Caretaker Committee Chairman, Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi, dated April 8, 2025.
The letter read in part:
“After due consultation, the following are nominated to fill the following positions: Hon. Charity Airobarueghian, Minority Leader, and Hon. Yekini Idaiye, Minority Whip.”
The reshuffle comes amid growing speculation about shifting political alliances within the Assembly, especially as the APC pushes to cement its influence.
