Power play? INEC Chairman Yakubu Shows Up At Meeting Hours After Fake Sack Report

The rumour, which spread via WhatsApp, falsely claimed that Prof. Yakubu had been replaced by Prof. Olamilekan Bashiru, allegedly on the orders of President Bola Tinubu. The message, which had no credible source, was quickly debunked.

O’tega Ogra, the President’s Senior Special Adviser on Digital and New Media, took to his handle to label the report as “fake news.”

 

Despite nearing the end of his second term, Prof. Yakubu remains in office and actively leading the commission. On Tuesday, INEC’s official account confirmed his presence at the weekly meeting in Abuja, stating:

> “The Independent National Electoral Commission’s weekly meeting began earlier today at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja, with the Hon. Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu superintending.”

The post also listed several attending National Commissioners, including Sam Olumekun, May Agbamuche-Mbu, Kenneth Ukeagu, Abdullahi Abdu Zuru, and Baba Bila. INEC added that critical decisions were expected to be made during the meeting.
