NUPRC Boss Cancels Birthday Celebration, Gives Reason

Gbenga Komolafe, the Chief Executive of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), has opted to cancel all activities planned for his birthday celebration, originally scheduled for September 30th.

Komolafe, a distinguished member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, marked his 60th birthday on September 26th. In light of the challenging economic situation in Nigeria, he has chosen to forego the planned celebrations, as conveyed in a statement personally signed by him on Wednesday.

The statement, titled ‘Cancellation of Thanksgiving Service and Reception for CCE,’ expressed Komolafe’s gratitude for the intention of his well-wishers to gather friends and associates for a thanksgiving service and subsequent social gathering on Saturday, September 30, 2023. However, given the economic hardships faced by many in the nation and the concerted efforts of the government to stabilize the economy, Komolafe believed it would be insensitive, particularly as a public servant, to engage in an elaborate event, even if funded by others.

While acknowledging that the cancellation might inconvenience invited guests, Komolafe requested that both the thanksgiving service and the reception be postponed. He expressed his profound gratitude for the love and well-wishes he has received from family, friends, and associates, emphasizing the need for collective sacrifice for the betterment of the nation and its people. He concluded with a prayer for the Almighty’s blessings on everyone and for the recovery and growth of the country’s efforts.

Mr. Komolafe assumed the role of Chief Executive of the commission following his appointment by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2021, subject to confirmation by the Nigerian Senate.
