Speaking during an ireporteronline, interview on Monday, Okupe asserted that national interests must take precedence over sectional interests, emphasizing that the presidency must remain in the South after President Bola Tinubu’s tenure, even if Tinubu does not seek re-election.

Okupe remarked, “We have an established tradition of power rotation. The North completes eight years, followed by eight years in the South. For 2027, I categorically state that power cannot return to the North.”

He expressed disappointment in past Nigerian leaders, including Ibrahim Babangida, Olusegun Obasanjo, and Abdulsalami Abubakar, for failing to groom a younger generation to assume leadership roles. Okupe argued that this lack of continuity has hindered Nigeria’s political progress.

Warning against the North sponsoring a southern candidate to oppose Tinubu in 2027, Okupe noted that such a move could delay the North’s return to power for another eight years. He also defended President Tinubu’s ongoing reforms, urging Nigerians to view the current challenges as temporary.

Okupe concluded, “Reforms come with temporary pains, but these pains are the price for long-term gains. Tinubu’s policies, including the introduction of educational loans, show his commitment to addressing poverty and fostering development.”
