Ooni Of Ife Visits Emefiele In Kuje Prison, Makes Request

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II, has joined the growing list of influential Nigerians advocating for the release of Godwin Emefiele, the embattled former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Emefiele is currently in custody for his inability to meet the N300 million bail condition imposed on him.

Last month, Emefiele faced a six-count charge related to procurement fraud by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The charges accused him of using his position to confer a corrupt advantage on Sa’adatu Yaro, a CBN staff, by awarding a contract for the procurement of 43 vehicles worth N1.2 billion between 2018 and 2020.

Emefiele pleaded not guilty to the charges and was granted bail with conditions including a N300 million bond and two sureties with certificates of occupancy and titles of properties within the Maitama district in Abuja. He was also required to deposit all his travel documents with the court Registrar and remain within the Abuja Municipal Council.

Unable to meet the bail conditions, Emefiele was remanded in Kuje Correctional Facility until 2024. Recently, the Ooni of Ife reportedly visited Emefiele in prison twice in a bid to settle matters amicably between Emefiele and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, aiming to avoid further dehumanization of the former CBN governor.

Civil society groups and influential figures like Edwin Clark and James Ibori have also intervened on Emefiele’s behalf, citing concerns about his human rights violations and the legality of his detention.

Prior to his arrest by the EFCC,Emefiele had spent over four months in the custody of the Department of State Security (DSS).
