Organised Labour Proposes ₦615,000 Minimum Wage To FG
Organised Labour has presented a fresh proposal to the Federal Government, advocating for a minimum wage of ₦615,000 for workers across the country. According to an executive within the labour union, who spoke anonymously to Sunday PUNCH, the consensus on the new monthly wage was reached through consultations facilitated by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC)…..READ ALSO Federal Government’s Progress Report: Key Agreements With Organised Labour On Track
The labour leader disclosed, “We (NLC and TUC) have given our figures to the government (on the minimum wage), and it is ₦615,000. That is the position of the NLC and TUC on the matter. The government has been informed as well.”
This proposal comes amidst previous speculations raised by NLC President Joe Ajaero, who hinted at the possibility of demanding ₦1 million as the minimum wage due to rising inflation in the country. However, subsequent discussions and consultations have led to a consensus, with labour leaders settling on the figure of ₦615,000.
When questioned about the feasibility of meeting the May 1 deadline for the implementation of the new wage, the labour leader expressed optimism, stating, “Both the TUC and NLC have harmonised, and they have sent their position to the government. We are in the process.”
Additionally, the leader hinted at further negotiations with the government, particularly regarding the recent removal of the electricity tariff subsidy. This move, according to the labour representative, provides an opportunity for further discussions and potentially advocating for additional benefits for workers.
“Our position will be defended based on the new price of ₦225 per kWh of electricity. Although we (the government and Labour) are not in agreement, we are waiting to meet and decide on the next point of action,” the leader added, highlighting the ongoing dialogue between labour unions and the government.
