During a press conference held on Saturday to mark the 10th anniversary of the abduction, Prof Usman Tar reiterated the state’s commitment to the safe return of all the abducted girls.
The abduction, which occurred on April 14, 2014, by Boko Haram terrorists, shocked the nation and garnered international attention. While some of the girls managed to escape by jumping off the truck transporting them into the bushes, many others remain in captivity.
According to Prof Tar, of the 276 abducted girls, 187 have been rescued and reunited with their families over the past decade. Among the rescued girls were 57 who escaped on the day of the abduction. These rescued girls have been enrolled in various scholarship programs, capacity-building initiatives, and Second Chance Schools to help them reintegrate into society and become self-reliant.
However, the fate of the remaining 89 girls continues to weigh heavily on the hearts of the people of Borno State. Prof Tar emphasized that the state government, along with security forces, intelligence agencies, and communities, remains steadfast in its efforts to secure the release of the remaining girls.
“While we mourn the 89 Chibok girls still in captivity, we continue to hold prayer sessions in mosques and churches, hoping for their safe return,” Prof Tar stated during the press conference. He urged the families of the abducted girls to remain patient and assured them that the government is leaving no stone unturned in its quest to bring their daughters back home.
The Commissioner’s remarks were echoed by Zuwaira Gambo, the counterpart of Women Affairs, who emphasized the government’s commitment to rescuing the remaining girls and providing support to their families.
As the nation commemorates the 10th anniversary of the Chibok abduction, the call for justice and the safe return of the abducted girls remains paramount, serving as a reminder of the ongoing struggle against terrorism and the resilience of the Nigerian people.
