Alarm Rise As Electricity Generation Plummets To 2,775 Megawatts
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has raised concerns over a significant decline in electricity generation in the country, plummeting to 2,775 Megawatts (MW) as of Saturday, April 13, 2024. This downturn, reported by the Nigeria Electricity System Operator (NESO), represents a notable 32.3% decrease from the previous week’s generation of 4,099.87MW……READ ALSO List Of West African Countries With Cheapest Electricity Tariffs
According to data provided by the Independent System Operator (ISO), load allocation to the eleven Distribution Companies (DisCos) stood at 2,775.00 Megawatts as of 6 pm on the stated date. Among the DisCos, Abuja Disco received the highest allocation at 428MW, followed by Ikeja Electric at 422MW, Eko Disco at 359MW, Ibadan Disco at 335MW, Benin Disco at 227MW, and Enugu Disco at 200MW. Conversely, Yola Disco received the lowest allocation at 79MW, trailed by Jos Disco at 158MW, Kaduna Disco at 181MW, Kano Disco at 188MW, and Port Harcourt Disco at 198MW.
In a related development, the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) has vehemently opposed the recent electricity tariff hike implemented by the federal government under the leadership of Bola Tinubu. In a letter addressed to the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, the NUEE, represented by Acting General Secretary Dominic Igwebike, urged the immediate withdrawal of the tariff increase. The union expressed concerns that the hike would further burden the populace, particularly the economically disadvantaged, by driving up the cost of goods.
The tariff increase, announced by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) on April 3, primarily affects customers classified under “Band A,” who enjoy 20 hours of daily power supply. With the new tariff, these customers are expected to pay N225 kilowatt per hour, a substantial increase from the previous rate of N66.
The NUEE criticized the tariff hike as unjustifiable, particularly amid the country’s prevailing economic challenges, and accused the minister of making the decision without consulting relevant stakeholders.
