This follows a chaotic scene at the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, where supporters of Senator Samuel Anyanwu clashed with former Youth Leader Sunday Ude-Okoye.

Governors Seek Solutions Amid Internal Struggles

According to sources, the emergency meeting in Asaba, led by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, aims to resolve key issues, including the urgent need for a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, preparations for zonal congresses, and the ongoing leadership crisis surrounding the National Secretary position.

Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum blamed party leaders for fueling the crisis, stating that those responsible for uniting the PDP were instead contributing to its divisions. Addressing the BoT, he pledged to ensure the NEC meeting takes place in February as requested by the Governors’ Forum and other party stakeholders.

Violent Clash at BoT Meeting

A senior member of the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC), speaking anonymously, revealed that BoT members protested an assault on Ude-Okoye by a supporter of Anyanwu during the meeting.

The PDP has been in turmoil since the 2023 elections, with some party members accusing Damagum, a close ally of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, of exacerbating the crisis. The party’s NWC, BoT, and state chapters remain divided, with leaders exchanging heated words, deepening the rift.

Leadership Accusations and Plea for Unity

Damagum criticized party leaders for undermining the NWC, saying, “I often find out about meetings involving my NWC members only after they have been summoned elsewhere without my knowledge.”

He urged leaders to prioritize unity over personal ambitions, warning, “You may achieve your goals, but if you destroy the foundation, your success will be short-lived.”

BoT Chairman Adolphus Wabara also expressed frustration, condemning the leadership crisis and emphasizing the urgent need for an NEC meeting in February to restore order.

Legal Battles Over National Secretary Position

The leadership crisis intensified following conflicting court rulings regarding the PDP National Secretary role. The Enugu Court of Appeal upheld Ude-Okoye’s appointment, while an Abuja court later issued an order allowing Anyanwu to remain in office until the Supreme Court resolves the matter.

The BoT meeting turned chaotic when Ude-Okoye was forced out, prompting security forces to intervene. Party leaders later demanded an apology from Anyanwu’s supporters, allowing both men to remain in the meeting as co-secretaries pending legal resolution.

APC Reacts to PDP Crisis

Reacting to the turmoil, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) mocked the PDP, calling the crisis an “entertaining drama.” APC National Publicity Director Bala Ibrahim said, “The PDP’s inability to manage itself shows why Nigerians were fortunate to have them removed from power.” He invited PDP leaders to the APC Progressives Institute for lessons on political management.

As tensions rise, PDP governors hope their upcoming meeting in Asaba will pave the way for internal reconciliation and stability within the party.
