The issue was raised by Reno Omokri, a prominent social media personality, who challenged Obi and his supporters to identify a single school that was started and completed during Obi’s eight years as governor. Omokri even offered a reward for anyone who could provide evidence of such a school.

In response to this criticism, Obi explained during a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday that those who accused him of not building new schools failed to understand his administration’s priorities.

He clarified that when he assumed office in Anambra State, the education sector was in disarray, with many schools closed and the state ranked 26th in terms of educational standards nationwide. However, by the end of his tenure, Anambra had risen to the top position in terms of educational performance.

Obi emphasized that his focus was on improving the quality of existing schools, ensuring they had the necessary resources and infrastructure to provide a conducive learning environment. He believed that investing in revitalizing existing schools was more important than constructing new ones, especially when the existing ones were in a state of disrepair.

According to Obi, his administration’s goal was to ensure that schools were equipped to meet the needs of students and teachers alike, rather than simply building new structures for the sake of it. He likened the situation to prioritizing the repair of internal roads over constructing coastal lines, highlighting the importance of addressing existing challenges before embarking on new projects.
