Rt Hon Taiwo Olatunbosun, the State Commissioner for Information, highlighted the achievement in a statement released to the press in Ado Ekiti. He emphasized the importance of this development, especially as Ekiti State becomes one of the first two states in Nigeria to officially assume regulatory oversight of electricity markets within its jurisdiction.

Olatunbosun attributed this success to the dedication of Governor Oyebanji towards providing consistent and reliable electricity to the people of Ekiti State. He reiterated the government’s commitment to improving the state’s infrastructure and enhancing socioeconomic activities through stable electricity supply.

The transfer of regulatory authority to the EERB means that the bureau will now be responsible for enforcing relevant laws, issuing licenses and permits, and ensuring compliance with energy efficiency standards across the state. This includes overseeing the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity, as well as conducting inspections and monitoring to uphold safety and security standards.

Additionally, Olatunbosun announced directives for electricity distribution companies, such as BEDC and IBEDC, to establish subsidiaries responsible for intrastate supply and distribution within Ekiti State. These subsidiaries will operate under the supervision of the EERB and obtain necessary licenses for their operations.

The Commissioner emphasized that these measures are aimed at achieving uninterrupted electricity supply and distribution in Ekiti State, with all transfers expected to be completed by the end of October 2024.

Highlighting the state government’s achievements in the power sector, Olatunbosun mentioned various projects aimed at improving electricity infrastructure across Ekiti State. These include the establishment of an Independent Power Project, rehabilitation of key installations, and extension of electricity networks to rural areas, all aimed at enhancing socioeconomic development and improving the lives of Ekiti residents.

In conclusion, Prof Bolaji Aluko, the State Commissioner for Infrastructure and Public Utilities, expressed optimism about the future collaboration between the state government, regulatory bodies, and electricity providers to achieve the goals outlined in the Electricity Act 2023 and ensure reliable electricity supply for all Ekiti residents.
