Police Apprehend 195 Suspects, Rescue 19 Abducted Victims In Enugu

In a press briefing held on Friday in Enugu, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Kanayo Uzuegbu, disclosed the outcomes of the operations conducted from the beginning of April to May 3. Among the recovered items were 10 AK-47 rifles, one sub-machine gun, 37 locally fabricated firearms, and 67 live ammunition of various calibers. Additionally, 78 live cartridges, 25 vehicles, 15 tricycles, and 25 motorcycles were also seized.

According to Uzuegbu, the arrests were made in connection with a range of offenses, including kidnapping, armed robbery, theft, murder, culpable homicide, unlawful possession of firearms, rape, defilement, cultism, vandalism, and other related crimes.

Of the apprehended suspects, 29 were implicated in kidnapping, 28 in armed robbery, 25 in theft, and seven in murder and culpable homicide. Additionally, 20 individuals were arrested for unlawful possession of firearms, four for rape and defilement, 37 for involvement in cultism, and 45 for vandalism and various other offenses.

Uzuegbu highlighted that a significant number of the suspects have already been arraigned in court and remanded in custodial centers, while investigations into others are ongoing. Notably, he mentioned that two male suspects involved in conspiracy and abduction have been tried, convicted, and sentenced to three years imprisonment.

Despite these law enforcement successes, Uzuegbu emphasized that Enugu State remains relatively peaceful, secure, and safe for all law-abiding residents to conduct their legitimate businesses. He urged citizens, particularly media practitioners and netizens, to exercise discretion, objectivity, and accuracy when reporting sensitive security issues. This, he stressed, is crucial to prevent the spread of misinformation, fear-mongering, and unnecessary tensions within the community.

Furthermore, Uzuegbu cautioned against actions that could potentially violate the law, particularly citing the Cybercrime Act, which carries legal consequences for such infractions.

The Commissioner’s address underscores the commitment of the Enugu State Police Command to maintaining law and order while safeguarding the rights and security of all residents.
