tensions in the state.
This warning follows Obasa’s return from the United States, where he addressed his supporters and insisted that his removal as Speaker on January 13, 2025, was unconstitutional.
In an official statement released on Saturday, signed by Ogundipe Olukayode on behalf of the Assembly, lawmakers reiterated their unwavering support for the newly elected Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, and affirmed their commitment to the January 13 impeachment decision. They also stressed that the impeachment was based on allegations of misconduct and mismanagement.
“It is important to clarify that over two-thirds of the members of the Lagos State House of Assembly are fully united behind the new Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda,” the statement read.
The lawmakers emphasized that their decision to impeach Obasa was within their constitutional rights, noting that they were all elected by their constituencies and were entitled to remove principal officers, including the Speaker.
The statement condemned Obasa’s recent actions as “uncalled for and unparliamentary” and called for peace and harmony in the state. “I appeal to the former Speaker to follow the path of peace, as the current stance will only create unnecessary tension,” Olukayode said.
The House vowed to protect its integrity and maintain peace throughout Lagos State, concluding, “Peace we want in Lagos, and peace we will achieve.”
