Tope Fasua, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Economic Affairs, revealed this development, highlighting the government’s determination to curb the manipulation of the forex market and prevent illicit financial activities.
The ban, which was communicated to telecommunication companies by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), targets major platforms including Binance, Forextime, OctaFX, and others accused of facilitating currency speculation and money laundering.
The decision comes on the heels of a directive from the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, who ordered a crackdown on currency speculators to safeguard the stability of the naira and protect the economy from further harm.
Fasua commended the swift action taken by the government, noting a significant positive impact on the exchange rate within hours of the ban. He expressed hope that such measures would be sustainable in addressing the challenges faced by the naira.
However, concerns remain about the potential repercussions of floating the naira, as Fasua emphasized the fragility of the economy and the adverse effects on the cost of living for Nigerians.
As the nation grapples with economic uncertainties, the ban on these platforms signals a determined effort by the government to restore stability and confidence in Nigeria’s financial landscape.
