Protests Erupt In Benue Over Escalating Violence: Indigenes Demand Government Action
Indigenous residents of Gwer West Local Government Area in Benue State have taken to the streets to voice their outrage over a recent surge in violence, blockading the Makurdi-Naka road in protest. The demonstrations follow a series of attacks that claimed the lives of 26 people across three communities within the council area, allegedly at the hands of suspected herdsmen…….READ ALSO Impeached, Disgraced, and Rejected: APC Etsako West Protests Philip Shaibu’s Alleged Defection
The protest, characterized by impassioned chants and placard-waving, targeted the perceived inadequacy of the state government’s response to the crisis, particularly its failure to effectively enforce the Anti-Open Grazing Law. This legislation, designed to curtail conflict between farmers and herders, has faced challenges in implementation, contributing to ongoing tensions in the region.
Among the protesters’ demands is a call for enhanced security measures from both federal and state authorities to safeguard communities against armed herders. Former local government officials and community leaders, such as Francis Ayagah and Titus Numzua, emphasized the urgent need for government intervention to address the root causes of insecurity and restore peace to the region.
Senator Titus Zam and Asema Achado, representing Benue North West Senatorial District and Gwer East/Gwer West Federal Constituency respectively, echoed these sentiments, condemning the attacks and urging swift action to bring the perpetrators to justice. Their statements underscore the gravity of the situation and the collective resolve to hold authorities accountable for ensuring the safety and security of all residents.
