In the wake of President Bola Tinubu’s recent meeting with state governors to address escalating insecurity and kidnapping nationwide, Arase emphasized the need for stringent measures to prevent misuse of state police authority.

During an appearance on Inside Sources with Laolu Akande on Channels Television, Arase stressed the importance of implementing safeguards to curb potential abuse by state executives.

“Policing is a localized endeavor, and crime is inherently tied to the environment. The concept of state police is worth considering, but it requires careful structuring,” Arase emphasized.

He raised concerns about the potential politicization of law enforcement if governors were granted sole authority over appointing key police officials.

“Governors should not unilaterally appoint commissioners of police and deputy commissioners. It’s crucial to ensure a fair and inclusive process,” Arase asserted.

To mitigate the risk of abuse, Arase proposed empowering diverse stakeholders, including civil society organizations, reputable lawyers, traditional leaders, and religious figures, to participate in the appointment of police commissioners within the state police framework.

Expressing dismay over the country’s crime rate, Arase underscored the importance of enforcing consequences for criminal behavior to deter offenders.

“Investigations and arrests alone are insufficient. We must prioritize prosecution to send a clear message that crime will not go unpunished,” Arase emphasized.

He emphasized the crucial role of effective law enforcement in fostering a conducive environment for investment and economic growth.

“You cannot attract investment to a region plagued by lawlessness. Prosecution serves as a deterrent and promotes investor confidence,” Arase concluded.
