Rivers Assembly Issues Fresh Threat As It Overrides Fubara
The Rivers State House of Assembly has taken decisive action against Governor Sim Fubara by passing the state Public Procurement (Amendment) Bill, 2024 into law. This move marks the third instance in three months where the assembly has overridden the governor’s assent, signaling a growing rift between the legislative and executive branches……READ ALSO APC Claims Fubara Plots To Obtain Court Order Declaring Rivers Assembly Illegal
In March, the assembly rejected Fubara’s refusal to enact the Rivers State House of Assembly (RSHA) Service Commission Law, followed by a similar decision in April regarding the local government amendment bill. Now, with the passing of the procurement amendment bill, the assembly has once again demonstrated its resolve to uphold the state’s laws.
During the plenary session on Monday, the lawmakers emphasized their adherence to constitutional provisions and passed the bill into law with a two-thirds majority vote. Speaker Martin Amaewhule underscored the importance of the bill in safeguarding taxpayers’ money and ensuring transparency in government spending.
Expressing concern over the governor’s alleged misconduct, Amaewhule reiterated the assembly’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and the constitution. He criticized what he described as a disregard for due process and the prevalence of arbitrary contract awards, vowing that the assembly would not tolerate breaches of the law by the governor.
The assembly’s actions underscore a growing tension between the legislative and executive arms of government in Rivers State, raising questions about the future governance and stability of the state.
