Sad Day For Football: World Cup Winner Franco Baresi Passes Away

Italian football legend and AC Milan great, Franco Baresi, has passed away at the age of 66, marking the end of an extraordinary career that established him as one of the greatest defenders in football history.

According to Ireporter Online, AC Milan confirmed the death of the former captain, describing him as a figure whose influence and contributions would remain permanently embedded in the club’s history.

“The history of AC Milan is in tears following the passing of Franco Baresi. His example and profound impact, like his number 6 shirt, will forever be an integral and fundamental part of the Club’s DNA and journey,” the club stated.

Baresi, who underwent surgery for a lung nodule in 2025, had recently returned to public life and was among the personalities who participated as torchbearers during the opening ceremony of the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics.

Regarded as one of the finest defenders the sport has produced, Baresi spent his entire professional career with AC Milan after joining the club’s youth academy in 1974.

He made his senior debut for the Rossoneri in 1978 and later became the club’s captain, leading Milan through one of its most successful periods.

During his two decades with the Italian giants, Baresi recorded 719 appearances, winning six Serie A titles and three European Cup/UEFA Champions League trophies. His iconic number six jersey was retired by AC Milan after his retirement in 1997.

At international level, Baresi represented Italy 81 times and was part of the squad that lifted the 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain. He later captained the national team during the 1994 World Cup in the United States, where Italy finished as runners-up after a penalty shootout defeat to Brazil.

Despite missing a penalty in the final shootout, Baresi’s reputation remained untouched, with fans and football figures continuing to celebrate his leadership, intelligence and defensive excellence.

Born in Travagliato near Brescia, Baresi joined AC Milan after being rejected by city rivals Inter Milan during his youth career. He later became one of the rare footballers to spend an entire elite career at one club despite receiving interest from several major European teams.

After hanging up his boots, Baresi remained connected with AC Milan through different roles within the club, contributing to player development and serving as an ambassador for the Rossoneri.

His death has triggered tributes across the football world, with fans and former players remembering him as a symbol of loyalty, class and defensive mastery.
