Don’t Japa Yet, Something Big Is Coming’ – Lagos Health Commissioner Tells Nigerians

According to Ireporter Online, Abayomi made the appeal in a statement shared on his official X handle, where he encouraged healthcare workers, including those who have already moved overseas, to consider contributing to the development of Nigeria’s medical system.

The commissioner stated that the current period is not the right time for health professionals to permanently leave the country, as the government is building what he described as an “iconic” project that would require the expertise of Nigerian doctors and other specialists.

“To all our medical professionals, this is not the time to ‘japa’. Something big is going to happen. You can leave, but not for too long. For those who have left, we are building something iconic. Start thinking about how you can contribute,” Abayomi said.

He further urged medical professionals interested in contributing to the initiative to reach out to the Ministry of Health.

Meanwhile, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has approved urgent dredging and maintenance work on 28 additional primary drainage channels across the state following recent flash floods caused by heavy rainfall.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed that the intervention was part of efforts to address flooding challenges and improve drainage capacity across Lagos.

According to Ireporter Online, Wahab explained that the recent rainfall was an extreme weather event that produced a significant volume of water within a short period, overwhelming some drainage systems and causing temporary flooding in several areas.

Communities affected by the flooding included Victoria Island, Lekki, Ikeja, Gbagada, Mushin, Mafoluku and other parts of the state.

The Lagos State Government said the additional drainage maintenance measures were aimed at reducing the impact of future heavy rainfall and improving flood management across the metropolis.
