In the state capital, Owerri, a significant number of business establishments, including banks, markets, and food outlets, remained closed, disregarding the state government’s instruction to resume operations under the threat of closure.

The streets of Owerri, such as Wetheral, Douglas, Okigwe, Egbu, Mbaise, Nekede, Bank, and adjoining roads like Aladinma and Ikenegbu Layout, were devoid of activity, as evidenced by The Guardian’s observations.

The presence of vehicles on the roads was minimal, and security forces conducted patrols throughout the city in coordinated efforts. Similar situations were witnessed in other areas of the state.

Some shop owners who did open their businesses offered limited products and services, conducting transactions discreetly with their customers.

Nnamdi Kanu had communicated through his legal representative, Aloy Ejimofor, the discontinuation of the sit-at-home action, citing adverse economic effects on the people of the South East region. However, Simon Ekpa, who operates from Finland and leads another faction, dismissed this directive as false.

A merchant named Tagboo, located on Wetheral Road, expressed that the sole means to terminate the sit-at-home protest is for President Bola Tinubu to issue a declaration securing Kanu’s release from detention.

He remarked, “They are aware of the necessary steps. If Tinubu ensures Kanu’s release, then we will have confidence in ending the Monday sit-at-home. When we hear it from him, we will believe it.”
