The evolving storyline within Edo State’s government house in Benin City has made it abundantly clear – the previously solid unity has deteriorated, leading Governor Godwin Obaseki and Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu to now find themselves in opposing camps.

The governor alleges that his deputy is attempting to overshadow him, and the conflict has escalated to the point where it is rumored that Obaseki might physically confront Philip if they were to cross paths.

Numerous theories have surfaced, describing the causes of the two previously close friends’ ongoing conflict. Regardless of the Governor’s choices, the unavoidable truth is that Philip persists in his quest of the governorship.

This clash has now become the central point of contention, as the Governor endeavors to thwart Philip’s aspirations in alignment with his own chosen candidate.

Just last night, a dramatic revelation emerged, akin to the unveiling of a hidden truth beneath the moon’s gentle glow. In a move reminiscent of the proverbial winds of change, the Edo North PDP chose to steer their course away from Philip Shaibu’s gubernatorial ambitions. With the gravity of a falling star, they solemnly passed a vote of no confidence on the Deputy Governor, echoing the sentiment that even the mightiest rivers can change their course.

Yet, in this swirling storm of shifting allegiances, a beacon of constancy emerged – like the North Star guiding lost travelers home. The Edo North PDP rekindled their unwavering loyalty to Governor Godwin Obaseki, standing beside him like a sturdy tree weathering the tempest.

Conversely, Philip Shaibu’s approach to the situation prompts inquiries about his allegiance to his boss, Obaseki. Take, for example, the case of Chief Pius Odubu, the former deputy governor under Adams Oshiomhole’s administration. Odubu once contested the governorship as an alternative to Adams Oshiomhole’s favored pick, Godwin Obaseki, during the final stages of Oshiomhole’s tenure.

Notably, Odubu did not find himself at odds with his leader due to his gubernatorial ambitions. This situation prompts one to ponder: if Odubu managed to maintain harmony with his boss while pursuing his political aspirations, what seems to be Philip’s underlying challenge? As the street would ask WETIN BE HIM PROBLEM?

The PDP has made a claim, asserting that the catalyst behind the insurmountable discord between Obaseki and his forerunner, Adams Oshiomhole, is none other than Philip Shaibu and his rash verbal expressions.

Philip directed harsh words and numerous derogatory remarks towards Oshiomhole, to the extent that if Oshiomhole were to speak candidly, tears might have welled up in his private moments.

Oshiomhole, who had essentially taken Philip Shaibu under his wing, found himself subjected to Philip’s affronts to a degree that raises questions about Philip’s character. As Nyesom Wike phrased it, “E Dey Smoke IGBO” – implying that Philip’s actions seemed erratic and questionable.

When a child shows disrespect to their father, they inevitably show disregard for the legacy of their family’s ancestors. Can forgiveness extend to Philip in this context? Particularly when considering that Philip orchestrated the removal of Oshiomhole from his position as National Chairman. It’s noteworthy that Oshiomhole displayed wisdom in pursuing a Senate seat for Edo North; had he not, he might have fallen victim to Philip’s ominous intentions. In a parallel vein, just as a child who neglects their father’s land may end up with a barren plot, Philip’s actions might have inflicted a severe wound upon himself. Like a ship set adrift, Shaibu’s influence has waned, and Obaseki now finds it hard to place trust in both Philip Shaibu and Oshiomhole. The foundation of trust has been fractured, leaving Philip in a precarious position where neither side can place confidence in him.
