The passage of the bill follows thorough deliberations and the adoption of the report presented by the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND, chaired by Senator Muntari Dandutse. The report was presented during a plenary session held on Wednesday, March 20.
To expedite the process, the Senate had suspended relevant sections of its standing rules and referred the bill to the Committee of the Whole for consideration. President Bola Tinubu had transmitted the bill to the National Assembly for review and passage the previous week.
The bill aims to facilitate easy access to higher education for financially disadvantaged Nigerians by establishing the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, which will provide interest-free loans for educational purposes.
In a related development, the Federal Government has allocated a total of N160 billion in the 2024 budget for the implementation of the Consumer Credit Scheme and the Student Loan Scheme. Of this amount, N100 billion has been earmarked for the consumer credit scheme to stimulate the manufacturing sector and support consumers. Additionally, N50 billion from the signed budget and an additional N10 billion from the supplementary budget have been allocated for the student loan scheme.
These initiatives underscore the government’s commitment to addressing the financial barriers that hinder access to education and fostering the development of human capital in Nigeria.
