Shocking! Ogun State Clamps Down On Companies Over Fatal Workplace Disasters

The Ogun State Government has ordered the closure of two industries—Quantum Steel Industry in Ogijo, Sagamu Local Government, and Xinfeng Plastics Limited along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway—following industrial accidents that reportedly led to fatalities.…….READ MORE

A statement from the Ogun State Ministry of Environment confirmed that Quantum Steel was shut down after an industrial explosion caused multiple casualties, with some victims still receiving medical treatment. Meanwhile, Xinfeng Plastics was closed after a machine operator, Ishaku Monday, tragically lost his life due to electrocution.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA) and Chairman of the State Taskforce on Environmental Compliance, Farook Akintunde, explained that the decision to shut down these companies was to facilitate a thorough investigation into the root causes of the incidents and implement preventive measures.

“As a government, we are committed to conducting a transparent and diligent investigation, including consulting external safety experts, to ensure such tragedies do not happen again,” Akintunde stated.

He further expressed disappointment that despite continuous government inspections and safety awareness campaigns, such accidents still occurred, prompting the urgent need for decisive action.

The affected companies will remain closed until investigations are concluded and new safety protocols are firmly in place.

Additionally, the Ogun State Government has also shut down Wemco Nigeria Limited in Magboro and Beautiful Fibre in Ogere. Wemco was penalized for obstructing state officials from investigating an erosion-related dispute with the local community, while Beautiful Fibre was found guilty of exposing workers to hazardous chemicals without providing proper protective equipment.
