Adaku, a young professional residing in Gbogije in the Lekki-Epe area, shared her experience. “After securing a promising job in Victoria Island, I found myself spending N6,000 daily on transportation. This financial burden became unmanageable, leading to my resignation. I aimed to sustain myself but ended up spending my entire salary on commuting,” she lamented.

Her situation mirrors that of many Lagosians, whose hopes are being dashed by the soaring commuting costs.

BRT: A Diminishing Hope
The once-promising Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, which provided an affordable transportation option, is now causing more frustration than relief.

Residents like Kemi, who commutes from Ajah to CMS, expressed their disappointment. “Waiting for the BRT means I’m late for work due to the long lines. In the evening, it’s even worse, with a scarcity of buses. Regular fares can range from N2,000 to N2,500 to Ajah, and for farther destinations, it’s between N3,000 and N3,500. We are enduring a nightmare.”

Another parent recounted spending N10,000 for his child to travel from Gbogije to the University of Lagos, Akoka, to collect a certificate, exclaiming, “People are suffering because of this madness.”

For commuters like Mr. Kingsley, evenings in Mile 2 have become synonymous with despair. “We are in trouble. The fare from Mile 2 to the First Gate is now N400. We are truly suffering,” he shared.

Meanwhile, for Mr. Kola Bolaji, a commuter from Abule Egba, the fare to Oshodi has surged from N400-N500 to N700, often exceeding N1,000 on busy days like Mondays and Fridays. “Everyone acknowledges the hardships. While some support the reform agenda, others question how long we must endure before seeing real benefits,” he added.

Significant Lifestyle Adjustments
For many, like Bola, commuting from Ikorodu to Lagos Island has prompted significant lifestyle changes. “Many workers are opting to stay on the Island during the week to cut commuting costs, leading to massive travel on Mondays and Fridays,” she explained.

Even ferry services, once seen as a cost-effective alternative, have become prohibitively expensive. “The fare from Ikorodu to the Island has surged from N500 to N3,000. Additional costs, like motorcycle fares to jetties, can push daily expenses to N6,000. For instance, I live near Igbogbo in Ikorodu, making my trip to the jetty an added N500. It’s truly disheartening.”

The ongoing transportation crisis in Lagos has far-reaching consequences, impacting not only commuters but also the courier, logistics, and transportation sectors that depend on an efficient system.

Both stakeholders and commuters are urgently calling for government intervention to stabilize fares, expand affordable transportation options, and invest in more sustainable infrastructure, including additional BRT buses.
