In a statement, the government, led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, confirmed its decision to take the matter to the Supreme Court in a bid to overturn the appellate court’s judgment.

The Court of Appeal, sitting in Lagos, had ruled on Friday to annul Olaleye’s earlier conviction for child defilement and sexual assault by penetration, which was handed down by the Special Offences and Domestic Violence Court in October. The court found the evidence presented by the prosecution to be “tainted” and “unreliable” and subsequently acquitted Olaleye.

Justice Rahman Oshodi had sentenced Olaleye to life imprisonment, following his conviction on two counts of defilement and sexual assault. However, the Appeal Court deemed the initial judgment flawed and granted Olaleye’s release.

In response to the ruling, civil rights organizations have called on the Lagos State Attorney General, Lawal Pedro SAN, to take the case to the Supreme Court, emphasizing the need to restore public confidence in the justice system.

According to reports, the state government has now filed a notice of appeal to inform all concerned parties of its intent to challenge the decision before Nigeria’s highest court.
