In an official statement released on their verified social media platforms, the Nigerian Army revealed that their efforts have resulted in the dismantling of 20 illegal oil refining sites, the arrest of 8 suspected oil thieves, and the destruction of 21 boats used in these illicit activities.
As part of the ongoing anti-bunkering operations, over 90,000 litres of stolen oil products have been recovered from various locations in the region.
The Army highlighted key recoveries, including a significant bust following a tip-off about illegal activities in Buguma, Asari-Toru LGA. The troops discovered a massive tarpaulin storage reservoir and a wooden boat containing over 37,000 litres of stolen condensates. Additionally, another illegal refining site in the Buguma/Bakana area was dismantled, where 9,000 litres of illegally refined Dual Purpose Kerosene (DPK) were confiscated.
In the Krakrama Community of Degema LGA, two illegal refining sites were destroyed, and various boats, including fibre and wooden types, were intercepted. Over 2,000 litres of stolen crude were also recovered.
At Gbede in Omoku, an illegal refining site was shut down, and 31 sacks containing more than 2,000 litres of stolen products were seized. In another raid at Odagwa – Imo Riverside in Etche LGA, over 3,500 litres of stolen products were confiscated, along with an illegal refining site and several boats.
In Bayelsa State, the operation continued with the dismantling of an illegal refining site in Yenagoa LGA, where around 8,000 litres of stolen products were seized.
Moreover, troops uncovered an attempt to vandalize a Shell Petroleum Development Company flowline at Opukushi in Ekeremor LGA. In Akwa Ibom State, they intercepted 11 drums containing approximately 3,080 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) in Mbo LGA.
The General Officer Commanding the 6 Division, Major General Jamal Abdussalam, urged the troops to maintain their vigilance in the region, ensuring a conducive environment for lawful exploration. He also appealed to the people of the Niger Delta to continue providing vital intelligence to assist in curbing the activities of economic saboteurs.
The operation reflects the ongoing commitment of the Nigerian military to combat oil theft and ensure the protection of Nigeria’s economic interests.
