of controversy.

The claim first emerged from a notorious journalist known for spreading fake news, who shared a video purporting to show French military forces operating in Nigeria. This false narrative was swiftly debunked by security experts who pointed out that the soldiers in the footage were actually British, and that such collaborations between the Nigerian military and foreign personnel for training exercises are commonplace. The journalist was forced to retract his post in the face of the evidence.

However, the claim gained new life when Abdourahamane Tchiani, the controversial head of Niger’s military regime, resurrected it. Tchiani, who came to power through a coup in July 2023 and has struggled to deliver meaningful reforms, accused France of running a military base in Nigeria to support terrorist groups. His allegations have found a willing audience among some who see political advantage in fanning the flames of anti-French sentiment ahead of the 2027 elections.

Despite Tchiani’s dramatic claims, both the Nigerian government and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have swiftly dismissed the allegations. Nigeria’s National Security Adviser and Information Minister have publicly challenged anyone to provide proof of such a military presence, asserting that Tchiani’s assertions are unfounded.

Tchiani’s claims lack credibility on multiple fronts. For one, the former director of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Rufa’i Ahmed, who he alleges is involved in these operations, left his post months before Tchiani made his accusations. Furthermore, the video being circulated as evidence was in fact recorded in 2013 in Mali, showing Nigerian soldiers participating in an African Union training exercise — a fact verified by Daily Trust’s fact-checking team.

Tchiani also alleged the existence of a secret French military base in the forests of Sokoto State, which local communities have emphatically denied. Additionally, the US and the UK have long requested military bases in Nigeria, only to be turned down by the Nigerian government. So, it is highly unlikely that France would be granted such a presence.

The ongoing rumors coincide with President Bola Tinubu’s recent visit to France, where he sought to attract French investors to Nigeria, reinforcing the already strong diplomatic ties between the two countries. The media frenzy surrounding the alleged French military presence is, therefore, a thinly veiled attempt by Tchiani to discredit Nigeria’s involvement in regional diplomacy.

Tchiani’s claims are nothing more than a desperate attempt to deflect attention from his own failures and rising dissent within Niger. With little to show for his time in power, he is now clinging to provocative narratives in a bid to rally support. However, his baseless accusations only serve to further isolate him from the international community and his own people.

As Niger’s population begins to realize that Tchiani’s promises were nothing more than empty rhetoric, it is likely that the real battle for his leadership will come from within his own military ranks. The truth, it seems, is that Tchiani has nothing to offer except falsehoods, and his time in power may soon come to an end.
